Memory Forest


Memory Forest explores the relationship between digital and craft processes, and between wood and aluminium. The project explores emotional attachment to trees and human dependence on them, while questioning how they are treated as material resources. Throughout the process, human and technological errors create glitches that become part of the final objects.

Project DescriptionMemory Forest explores the juxtaposition of digital and craft processes, as well as aluminium and wood. The work begins with a birch tree in athe artist’s garden in Cologne, which had been suffering from the effects of living in the city for many years. The tree looked ill, could barely carry leaves, and large branches were regularly ripped down by gusts of wind. As the tree was planned to be cut down, the project becomes a way of recording a memory of it before it disappears. The structure of the bark becomes the starting point for a process of 3D scanning, digital editing, 3D printing and metal casting. Its changing forms and textures are translated through a series of different materials and processes, with information being transformed or lost along the way.

These transformations also introduce what can be understood as glitches. These are moments of human or technological error that alter the original form. Rather than correcting these mistakes, the project embraces them as part of the resulting objects. The contrast between the organic shape of the bark and the industrial material of aluminium is central to the work. Aluminium mining and production are directly linked to environmental destruction, including deforestation. The material therefore creates a contradiction within the work. An industrial material is used to preserve the form of a tree. Through this process, Memory Forest explores memory, material culture and the emotional and practical dependency between humans and trees, while embracing the imperfections that emerge between nature, technology, and craftsmanship.
