Positive, Negative Space


Positive, Negative Space investigates the former Companhia União Fabril (CUF) industrial park in Barreiro, Portugal and its derelict landscape of ruins and materials left behind by industry. Through 3D scanning, drawing, cyanotype, photography, and casting, parts of the restricted site are brought outside the zone to document its current state and explore speculative futures.

Project Description
For Positive, Negative Space, the former CUF industrial park and its landscape, filled with leftover ruins and materials used by the industry before it is abandoned, are investigated. Through 3D scanning, drawing, cyanotype, and various casting methods, parts of the park are brought outside of the restricted zone to create a documentation of its current state before the planned renovations of the area. During this residency, the artist explores speculative realities, including planning for landscape redevelopment and waste culture in the former CUF industrial park. The goal of the project is to document the current state of the park through a variety of casting methods and 3D scanning of the landscape.

Through digital manipulation, seemingly mundane objects transform into digital fossils or archaeological objects for a speculative future. Technology supports the process through 3D scanning and printing, while technological failure is embraced to achieve unique and unexpected shapes. The practice explores the abstraction of realities through camera lenses, using video and photography to create forms of glitch art that comment on post-digital and speculative realities. An essential part of the practice is making moulds from digitally manipulated images. A variety of moulds are explored within the capacity of the workspace, becoming the basis for representative casts that further abstract digital artefacts.
