Restructured Fragments

Restructured Fragments explores abandoned architecture, construction waste, and the glitches created through 3D scanning and clay 3D printing. Found fragments from a demolished building become material for experimentation, investigating how machines reinterpret architectural details and transform glitches, mistakes and imperfections into new forms.

Project Description
The project develops from a fascination with the many abandoned buildings and construction sites in Bilbao. The focus falls onto skeletal building remains just 30 meters from the Basque Biodesign Centre. Finding a visual reminiscence to a glitch through these remains becomes the starting point for the project. The details of peeling paint, uneven surfaces, broken tiles, nails and bolts reveal a structure hidden beneath walls of buildings and homes. Four weeks after the residency begins, the structure is torn down, making the project a final documentation of this last in-between state of the building.

During the investigative stage, lines and shapes of the building are traced in drawings and arranged to create new shapes. Broken-off tiles and pieces of concrete are collected to create a small archive of found objects. Digital tracings of the building outlines are transformed into lines for laser engraving, creating small souvenir-like treasures from construction waste. The project also explores the possibilities of 3D scanning and 3D printing clay. Through trial and error, glitches, mistakes and missing pieces are embraced as the machine reinterprets architectural details. Bolts become clay loops, while broken tiles are interpreted as clay waves reminiscent of organic textures. The work challenges the familiar precision of 3D printing, exploring forms created through its layers, limitations and imperfections.
