Paper Ghosts

Paper Ghosts explores the perceived value of paper as a short-lived material that has no value once it has been classified as waste. Crumpled paper shapes are shown encased in vacuum formed plastic, plaster moulds and finally in porcelain and bone china showing how it receives new appearances in different materials.

Project Description
The work explores the intricate detail in paper waste. The action of taking a piece of paper and crumpling it preserves beautiful, randomised pleats across the surface. It is a very familiar image of thinking, being stuck but also productivity. A vacuum form moulder is used to create permanent plastic shapes of crumpled paper waste. The resulting pieces are reminiscent of landscapes or textile drapes across the plastic surfaces. The pieces show how versatile paper crumples can be and how different they look represented in another material. This step creates a material contrast and highlights an awareness of the amount of plastic waste being produced. The plastic objects receive a permanence through their use in the following mould-making process, while remaining in their shape and working as three-dimensional wall sculptures once their role in the mould-making process is completed.

To create particularly clean plaster moulds, the entire vacuum-formed plastic piece is used as the basis for a one-piece slip-casting mould. Plaster moulds are created for all of the shapes, relating back to the original paper from which the moulds are taken. Slip casting is chosen as a method because it is similar to recycling and paper making, creating a connection between the materials and processes.
